Physician Leadership and the Changing Landscape of Medicine

Our speaker Susan R. Bailey, MD, is an allergist/immunologist from Fort Worth, Texas, and was elected president-elect of the American Medical Association in June 2019. Previously, she served as speaker of the AMA House of Delegates for four years and as vice speaker for four years. Dr. Bailey, who has been active in the AMA since medical school when she served as chair of the AMA Medical Student Section, has held numerous leadership positions with the AMA. These include serving as chair of both the Advisory Panel on Women in Medicine and the AMA Council on Medical Education, and representing the AMA on the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and COLA. Her long history of service in helping guide organized medicine extends to the local and state levels as well. She has served as board chair and president of the Tarrant County Medical Society, and as vice speaker, speaker, and president of the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Bailey is an allergist in private practice, and has been with Fort Worth Allergy and Asthma Associates for over 30 years. She completed her residency in general pediatrics and a fellowship in allergy/immunology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., and is board certified in allergy and immunology, and pediatrics and has been awarded the title of Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.

Our moderator, Michael J. Darrouzet, was named the Executive Vice-President/CEO of the Texas Medical Association on Sept. 1, 2019. Prior to joining the TMA staff, he worked for the Dallas County Medical Society for 31 years, serving as the chief executive for the last 23 years. He is the fourth executive vice president in TMA’s 166-year history. Prior to joining DCMS, Mr. Darrouzet served as assistant administrator of Brookhaven Hospital in Dallas and as administrator of Willowbrook Hospital in Waxahachie, TX. He is the former president and chairman of the board of the North Texas Accountable Healthcare Partnership (the Health Information Exchange for North Texas), and until his move to the TMA he served on the board of directors of the Parkland Foundation, Dallas Medical Resources, Bishop Lynch High School, and the Southwest Transplant Foundation. Mr. Darrouzet is a former board member and past president of the American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE). In 2017, he was named a member of the inaugural class of the Recognized Fellows of AAMSE for his “exceptional leadership, dedication, and longstanding commitment to professional medical society management.” Mr. Darrouzet earned his bachelor of business administration in finance from The University of Texas at Austin, and his master of science in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio. He and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three daughters. In his spare time, he plays in a Dallas rock band and crafts custom acoustic guitars. In 2004, the Dallas County Medical Society awarded Michael the Millard J. and Robert L. Heath Award, the society’s highest recognition for a layperson who has supported the medical community.
